  Introduction to Guatemalan Textiles - Conclusion
 

 

Guatemalan traditional apparel reflects a myriad of information about the wearer and provides a sense of identity to his or her community.  Of the more than 100 villages in highland Guatemala, each has its own distinct system of symbols, colors, pattern, design, and manner of wear evident in the villagers’ clothing that creates a style unique to the community.  Additionally, modifications of these styles create substyles within the community that indicate different social groups within the village.  Indeed, Maya clothing can be considered a cultural identify badge readable by other Maya and by those educated in Mayan weaving.
