Santa Maria Nebaj

Santa Maria Nebaj is a remote village comprising one of the smallest ethnic cultures in Guatemala.  Yet the weavers of Nebaj have realized some of the widest recognition for their multi-hued huipils.

Huipils of Santa Maria Nebaj are typically worn tucked into the corte.  The corte is typically woven on the treadle loom and is predominately red with narrow yellow weft stripes.  Bandas in Nebaj feature red and white horizontal stripes with a section decorated with hourglass and diamond shapes.  This patterned section is worn at the front of the skirt.  The diamonds on the banda and huipil represent mountains.  The long-tailed birds represent Guatemala’s national bird, the Quetzal.
